138kms, 4’000meters elevation gain, 5.44hrs
First Place, 7.15min ahead of Urs Huber
At 7.15am we started in the middle of the town of Scuol, where I have some relatives and I have spent many times over the years on my holidays especially in my old school days.
I knew the first and last parts of the course, but not the monster climb near Livigno. This climb has been the longest and steepest I have ever raced so far. Bundi Silvio and myself were the only riders who rode it all the way.
My 28/34 gear ratio kept me pushing hard up the climb and it made the difference when catching the break away man in Urs Huber. From that point on it helped me gain more and more time on him to the finish.
The National Park Marathon is one of the most beautiful and varied races I have ever entered so far. The route selected was around the Swiss National Park. Wild landscape, lakes, big mountains, old towns and beautiful trails awaited every rider!
