120km, 5'000meter elevation gain, 6.02hrs
Second Place, 35sec down to winner Thomas Dietsch

06.30am was take off time in rain, fog and cold! Luckily we first had to climb for 1.5hrs, but in the middle we went through a mud road. My "fully" picked up all of the dirt and the wheel was almost not turning, even the chain not going through the rear derailleur anymore. I stopped and cleaned it as good as I could, but lost the contact with the leaders as a result. For the next 4hrs I was riding more or less by myself and at some points I started to have motivational problems.
I seemed to always lose a lot of time at the beginning of each climb, because I got cold during the downhills.
Before the last long uphill when the weather turned better, my legs started to feel good and my head got excited, because the leaders were not far away.
Finally, it was Frenchman Thomas Dietsch and I going for the win. After 6hrs we were attacking up the last 10min climb to the finish. He just had more of "the tick" left for the big win!
I only wish it would have been technical at the end. I do not like big open tar roads for finishing off a race. There it is too much about the legs only.
