1lap, 90kms, 3.46hrs,
3th Place, 7min off winner Jakob Fuglsang

(Report by Team Manager Bobby Behan)

The main men to watch on today’s start line were Fulsgang and Kessiakoff each from Cannondale Vredestein and our very own Christoph Sauser (Susi). Unfortunately, Liam Killeen was ill during the week resulting in his non participation at Roc D’Azur.

In today’s race Susi was running a 2008 Specialized Stumpjumper. The main difference between this bike and next year’s production version were the carbon cranks, which have already been seen on the team’s Epics and of course on Specialized’s top end S Works road bikes. Unfortunately, customs delays in Europe resulted in the late delivery of these bikes, which meant that only late last night were Christoph and Benno given the opportunity to complete the setup, which was very last minute considering that the race start was at 8am this morning! In the end Christoph was found “dialing” in his bike in the darkness!

At the first of three feeds Kessiakoff had taken the “bull by the horns” and had established a 45 second lead to his pursuers. At this point Christoph was forced to stop and move his saddle height. By feed two Kessiakoff was almost five minutes ahead with Chistoph trailing in about 20th-30th position almost nine minutes adrift. Little did we realise, but Christoph was sent in the wrong direction by marshals.

I had given up hope, but to my surprise at feed three Christoph had moved up to fourth position and by feed four was in third position and had reduced his margin to the leaders to just four minutes. Kessiakoff died and was caught and passed between these feeds by his team mate Fulsgang, who went on to record a great win, adding to his World U23 title, which he earned in September at Fortwilliam.

Susi really liked the 2008 Stumpjumper and was very impressed with the Brain Fork, which works under the same principle as the rear suspension

Once Christoph’s setup was right, he was extremely impressed with the Stumpjumper. “To have a second brain (brain system located in the fork) on the bike was a new experience and I was excited about testing something that I have never seen or used before. Even with little time to setup the bike I found it is easy to find the right settings. Both the fork and the rear brains made everything so smooth and fast and with the weight of 9.6kilos, the stiffness coupled with the power transfer straight into forward momentum, impressed me. I felt smooth, fast and confidently in control. Nobody could hold my rear wheel in any decent! What is it now – The US machine or the finely tuned Swiss machine!”

Christoph’s Bike Setup:
